ESG at VARO
Responsibility and integrity have been part of VARO since our founding in 1935
90 years of hands-on engineering – with an eye on the future
ESG is an integrated part of how we develop and build machinery, helping our customers achieve solutions that are well thought out, properly documented, and built for many years of reliable operation.
Our approach to ESG
Today, we call it ESG—Environmental, Social, and Governance—but in practice, it is still about acting responsibly across every part of the business.
We take a systematic and long-term approach to responsibility, both because it is part of who we are and because it creates value for our customers and business partners.
We focus on reducing energy consumption, making responsible material choices, promoting safety and well-being, and designing for long service life. This means our customers receive solutions that operate reliably and support their own requirements for quality, sustainability, and responsible business practices.
Responsibility has always been part of who we are
At VARO, we have always taken pride in doing things the right way—with our craftsmanship, our people, and our surroundings. Long before ESG became a recognised framework, responsibility was already a natural part of how we ran our business.
When our founder, Ingvar Olesen, made sure the local stream was kept free of waste to protect the surrounding environment, it was not driven by policy or strategy—it was simply the right thing to do.
That mindset continues to guide us today. We still believe in delivering solutions that are carefully considered from every perspective—technically, socially, and environmentally.
42 goals with real impact
We have selected 42 specific ESG goals that are relevant to our business and where we have the greatest opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
This allows us to focus our efforts on the areas that matter most to our company, our customers, and the wider society of which we are all a part.
For our customers, this means working with a partner that takes a structured approach to responsibility and can support the increasing requirements many companies face in areas such as documentation, compliance, environmental performance, and supplier responsibility.
Our 42 ESG goals are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with particular focus on:
- Quality Education (Goal 4)
- Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8)
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal 9)
- Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12)
Examples of concrete initiatives
Green energy
Our 1,500 m² solar panel installation covers approximately two-thirds of our total electricity consumption. Our goal is to become theoretically self-sufficient in electricity by 2027.
ISO 14001
We are ISO 14001 certified and actively measure and document our environmental performance. This provides a shared framework for working systematically with environmental improvements across the entire organization.
People and development
We continuously train apprentices and interns because we believe that responsibility also means investing in people, skills, and future talent.
Nature and biodiversity
We actively work to promote biodiversity across our premises, helping to create greener and more vibrant surroundings.
Ethical business practices
Responsibility is also reflected in the way we conduct business. That is why we have a code of conduct that defines how we work with customers, suppliers, and colleagues—with respect, professionalism, and integrity.
When you work with VARO, you gain a partner that takes responsibility for more than the finished machine. We also take responsibility for the process behind it: the quality, the documentation, the collaboration, and the decisions made along the way.
Our ESG efforts are a natural part of how we operate. This means we develop solutions that support your requirements for quality, documentation, sustainability, and compliance—and that are built to deliver value for many years.
For us, innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. It is not only about developing technology that works, but about creating solutions that deliver value far beyond the machine itself.
Our quality and environmental policy
Quality policy
At VARO, quality is an integral part of our business foundation. Quality creates satisfied customers, efficient project execution, and a sustainable business – today and in the future. We strive to deliver solutions that create value for customers, employees, and business partners alike.
We are committed to:
- Learning from mistakes and non-conformities and using that knowledge to drive continuous improvement. Through our integrated management system, we ensure that our processes and products comply with both internal and external requirements.
- Translating customer needs and expectations into innovative and value-creating solutions with high functionality and documented quality.
- Continuously developing our standard machines to ensure they create value in our customers’ operations and support their business in the best possible way.
- Honouring our commitments and acting as a reliable and professional partner, with respect for time, cost, and quality.
- Ensuring financial responsibility throughout all projects and phases.
For VARO, quality means delivering on our promises – and continuously improving our ability to do so.
Environmental policy
VARO recognizes its responsibility to protect the environment and minimize its environmental impact while maintaining a healthy and financially sustainable business. We regard both environmental and economic responsibility as essential prerequisites for the company’s long-term viability and for contributing positively to societal development. For VARO, sustainability is about balancing environmental considerations and resource efficiency with operational and business needs, creating value both today and in the future.
We are committed to:
- Preventing pollution and using resources efficiently and responsibly
- Complying with applicable environmental legislation and other relevant obligations
- Integrating environmental considerations into decision-making processes and business development
- Working continuously to improve our environmental performance
- Ensuring that new technologies and developments take environmental considerations into account
Our approach to quality and the environment is built on the principle of being intelligent, thoughtful, and results-oriented, where high quality and minimal environmental impact go hand in hand. Through our integrated management system, we create synergy and alignment between quality and environmental responsibility.
