Interview with Hanne

I have worked at VARO since 1999. I trained as a technical assistant—now known as a technical designer—and since graduating in 1990, I have seen tremendous development within the profession.

My work covers a wide range of tasks, and I act as a link between engineers, purchasing, and production. The variety of responsibilities is one of the things that makes my job so interesting.

I have often been the only woman in the department, but that has never been a challenge. I enjoy the environment and have always had the freedom to shape my own workday. At the same time, it is great that the women from different departments get together—whether we work in engineering, HR, finance, or elsewhere in the company.

At VARO, there is a high level of trust and flexibility. You are given responsibility, and the company takes care of its employees when support is needed.

That means a lot to me—and it is undoubtedly one of the reasons why I am still here after 25 years.

Interview with Carsten

I completed my apprenticeship as a machinist in 1992, a profession that today is known as an Industrial Technician. At VARO, I work as a CNC turner, which means I primarily manufacture round components such as shafts, gears, and other machine parts that rotate—discs, bolts, screws, and similar components.

I receive drawings from the engineering and production planning teams, and it is my responsibility to coordinate with the operator at the saw to ensure that the material is prepared correctly. I work with computer-controlled machinery, so a large part of my job involves programming the machine to produce the components according to specification.

As an Industrial Technician at VARO, you are constantly challenged. We are always working on new and interesting projects rather than long production runs where you manufacture thousands of identical parts.

Of course, some recurring components come back from time to time and are further developed, but in general I work with very small production batches of five, ten, or fifteen pieces. That means you are constantly learning and developing new skills.

There is a great deal of freedom at VARO. Nobody is constantly looking over your shoulder. As long as you deliver your work on time, you have the flexibility to solve tasks in the way that makes the most sense for both you and the company—and I really appreciate that.

You also get the opportunity to work on many different types of projects. For engineers, it is almost like a playground. There are plenty of opportunities to think creatively and turn ideas into real-world solutions.
